AION
Imagine yourself joined with others as you fight for your very existence. Perhaps that may be an over-simplified definition of the Korean-originated game Aion but it is still a good one. As in most games, it is Good versus Evil with the added twist of pseudo-monster versus human. In cases such as that, humans cannot help but join together as they struggle for their very existence. The premise is an old one, going back to the first science fiction stories. But it is an effective one that has stood the test of time. In this case, the plot has been beautifully drawn, the characters imbued with talents worthy of the challenges set before them,. Is it any wonder the game is growing to include various ages, sexes, and people from all walks of life?
Good versus Evil – Empyrean Lords versus the Dragon Lords – as the fight for supremacy over human-kind blazed on. Aion (the god-like being) created the world (Atreia) and the humans that lived in it. He created the Balaur to look over, protect and serve the humans. But revolt was unavoidable and the five strongest Balaur became the five Dragon Lords who had to face the Empyrean Lords created in response to the threat the Dragon Lords represented.
The game is much more detailed than the above would have you think with opportunities for variations and individual actions and reactions that drive and direct other players as well as the individuals pushing the action. What makes this game so addictive, engrossing, and emotionally involving for players is the complexities of the battles, the strategies developed and implemented by players across the Internet and the unlimited heights of the combined imaginations of everyone who takes part of the game.
Aion gives players the opportunity to become part of a world-wide community dedicated to saving the world and each other. A kinship, a camaraderie develops between players that becomes much more than the interaction between people involved in a team sport. It provides people the chance to take a chance, be a hero, think of the strategy that will save the world or at least a small part of it. It allows players to gain importance and self-respect as they gain experience and the respect of their fellow players. It is pseudo-reality at its best and it is open to everyone daring enough to dare to take a chance.
